The company's patent filings have tailed off significantly in the recent past, suggesting that perhaps they aren't being as generous as might at first seem to be the case - and of course there is always the suspicion that the rider, to the effect that others are free to use the patented technology in good faith - provides an escape route should the company wish to change its policy.
